Scripture Readings |
“It’s a big book, full of big stories with big characters. They have
big ideas (not least about themselves) and make big mistakes.
It’s about God and greed and grace; about life, lust, laughter,
and loneliness. It’s about birth, beginnings, and betrayal; about
siblings, squabbles, and sex; about power and prayer and prison
and passion ... And that’s only Genesis.” from N.T. Wright,“Simply Christian”
If we are to love God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, we
must come to know and love the story through which God has revealed
himself to us. Not just little bits and pieces, but the whole story from its
glorious beginning, through the depths of sin; through resurrection to
new life, and on to the glorious to end yet to come.
We will be introducing larger parts of this story during
each worship service, beginning with Genesis Chapter 1. Each week a
designated reader will read a passage from this great story, some as long
as one chapter, some shorter. Over a period of approximately three years
we will hear the whole story of our redemption.
The Elders are aware that in our fast-paced society filled with 15 second
commercials, and 5 second news bites, it may not be easy for us to hear
these longer passages. But we encourage you to learn to listen week by
week. It is our desire that over time, we will learn to hear the story and
let it fully impact our lives.
Jesus understood that it was not always easy to listen. He often spoke
the phrase “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” or as a modern translator,
Eugene Peterson has phrased it “Are you listening? Really listening”
We encourage you to listen to the story week by week!
The schedule of readings will be updated weekly in the bulletin, and
posted here for a month or more in advance. We
encourage you to read the passages a day or two prior to each worship
service, and then again later each Sunday after our worship service.
May God richly bless you as you come to know
and love his story.
