VISUAL ELEMENTS |
|
The hope and prayer is to have the visual elements of worship in
the sanctuary connect us to the rhythm of the Christian year and challenge us to
experience a deeper awareness of each festival and season and their relevance to our
walk with the Lord and our worship of Him.
The purpose of the Visual Elements Ministry is to continue to use
a liturgical approach for the appearance of the sanctuary in order to deepen our worship
experience and heighten our awareness of the Christian year with its seasons and festivals.
Following this approach means using the traditional liturgical seasons and the colors
assigned to each season. i.e. Advent is dark blue. Liturgical colors express emotions and
ideas associated with each season. The dark blue of Advent symbolizes the night sky, the
darkness of the world waiting for the Light, and the anticipation of the coming King, first
as the Christ child and again as the victorious King over Satan. This system of colors will
be used throughout the sanctuary such as banners, flowers and other visuals. Liturgical
seasons help mark the passage of time and help us remember and re-experience the life of
Christ and the story of salvation.
Advent, the season of joyful anticipation and hope,
begins our church year. Advent means “coming” or “arrival”. The season of Advent has three elements
– celebrating the birth of the Christ child, waiting for His Second Coming and preparing ourselves
spiritually as those who are walking in darkness and awaiting a great light (Isaiah 9)!
This is a season of waiting! We read the prophecies from the Old Testament
and remember the generations of Jews that waited and longed for the promised Messiah. As we await the
Lord’s Second Coming with joyful anticipation this Advent, we have the opportunity to reflect on our
spiritual journey as individuals and as a congregation.
The story of redemption takes us to the manger. Christ was born a babe for
us – to die on a cross for our sins – to rise to life – to reign with God the Father and to come again!
Dark blue, the color of Advent, represents the night sky, the promise of a
light coming to the darkness (John 8:12), and Christ our Morning Star (Rev 22:16).
